Environment - Rock Designs
This stuff is so much fun to draw. I haven't put any work into perspective or depth in these but focussed purely on quick creative silhouette sketching. Each initial pencil sketch took around 1-2 minutes. Adding a few basic tones took the longest of everything in this process. My process involves about as little thought as you can put into design and still have things look cool. These remind me of the kind of abstract pattern doodles I used to draw as a kid. Just keep your pencil moving, and look for interesting shape combinations.

Animation tests
Ive been having a lot of fun these past few days putting a new animation rig through it's paces. I have a few animation scenes on the go including a fun dialogue shot to a Will Ferrel audio clip, and am finding him heaps of fun to animate. Here are a few of my animation poses rendered. Aside from giving them a little life, they look great largely due to an awesome job on model & texture by Dean Stolpmann and brilliant rigging by Kelsey Jones.

Character Development
A while ago I posted a character design for a new animation rig I'll be using at work to teach character animation. Here's a sneak peek of the puppet. The model and textures are the work of my work mate Dean Stolpmann. We've decided on calling him Clyde.
The image below shows my original design on the left and on the right the 3D stills thanks to Dean. The screen grab and render are from a shot I am busy animating as a demo for our animation students.
Check out more of Dean's artwork on his great blog at http://deanstolpmann.blogspot.com

Character sketch
This little guy is the result of a character doodling demo I did yesterday for a group of students at South Seas Film School. I used this doodle to explain my general approach to sketching creatively with no fixed outcomes in mind. I also briefly explained (although not in much detail) how that is something quite different from character design. Although I use creative sketches during character design, it is only a small part of the greater process. I have found many students who mistakenly understand character design to be simply drawing an idea from their mind or imagination. I sometimes spend the greater portion of my first design classes explaining that drawing an idea from your mind is not character design, but is simply drawing an idea from your mind. This one took me around 80 mins, and I added a couple more details this afternoon before posting it.

Aaarrrrrrh...I've been drinkin
.....said the pirate. I've been taking a character art class this week and demonstrating my approach to exploring and developing ideas. I didn't really do any lighting work on this one, and instead stuck to good old fashioned drawing and design ideas, and some basic color. I'll put up a few of the development sketches in another post. The process of this drawing was lots of fun and I have a ton of throw away sketches that I would love to have the time to develop further. Aaaaarrrrrrrrrrrh.....well.

Last Stop Garage
I did this demo & example for our Year 2 Layout students. The brief was to design and draw a simple Gas Station.
Welcome to the Last Stop, Gas and Family Feed Bag. The Last stop is a family owned establishment that is always out of gas, but takes fast food seriously. The 'feed bag' reference will perhaps only make sense to Simspons fans, but I got a kick out of the gag.

Back from the dead
Well, it seems that no blog is complete without a mandatory lengthy hiatus, followed up with some mandatory "I'm back" carry on. For those who don't read any of the nonsense I write... here is some colourful fun.
